The Gatlin Brothers – A Legendary Career in Country Music

Larry, Steve, and Rudy Gatlin are Grammy Award-winning country legends whose career spans nearly seven decades. With 7 #1 singles, 32 Top 40 hits, 24 studio albums, and 5 BMI Million-Air Awards, the Gatlin Brothers have left a lasting mark on the music world. Their hit “Broken Lady” earned them a Grammy for Best Country Song, while their chart-topping “All the Gold in California” and the album Straight Ahead brought them ACM awards for Single and Album of the Year, along with Male Vocalist of the Year for Larry.

As a solo songwriter, Larry Gatlin ranks #4 all-time for Billboard Top 40 self-penned hits. His songs have been recorded by music royalty including Elvis Presley, Barbra Streisand, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Glen Campbell, and many more. He is a proud inductee of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.

From their humble beginnings in Abilene, Texas in 1955, the Gatlin Brothers grew up singing gospel music, eventually performing coast to coast and making their national debut at the 1964 World’s Fair in NYC. Larry later moved to Nashville, where his songwriting caught the attention of Dottie West, Kris Kristofferson, and Johnny Cash, leading to a record deal with Monument Records. In 1975, Steve and Rudy joined Larry in Nashville, officially forming the trio that would go on to define a generation of country music.

Their signature hits include:

  • Broken Lady
  • All the Gold in California
  • Houston (Means I’m One Day Closer to You)
  • I Just Wish You Were Someone I Love
  • Night Time Magic
  • Love is Just a Game

The Gatlin Brothers have performed around the world—from the Grand Ole Opry (where they’ve been members for over 48 years) to Carnegie Hall, The White House, Madison Square Garden, and international stages like the Wembley Music Festival. They’ve sung the national anthem at major sporting events including the World Series, U.S. Open, NFL stadiums, NASCAR tracks, and even the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

They’ve shared the stage with country greats such as Kenny Rogers, Brad Paisley, Vince Gill, Rascal Flatts, The Oak Ridge Boys, and more. They’ve also entertained U.S. troops around the world, including in Kuwait, Qatar, UAE, and Germany.

In addition to touring (about 40 shows annually), the brothers continue to appear regularly at the Grand Ole Opry and are working on new music. Larry also wrote and produced a musical titled Quanah, which premiered to rave reviews in 2017.

Their television appearances are a who’s who of classic variety shows and specials, including:

  • The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson
  • Hee-Haw & Hee-Haw Honeys
  • The Midnight Special with Wolfman Jack
  • The Merv Griffin Show
  • The Barbara Mandrell Show
  • Oprah
  • Love Boat
  • Crook & Chase
  • Larry’s Country Diner
  • And their own ABC variety special

Career Highlights:

  • Grammy Award – “Broken Lady”
  • 3 ACM Awards – Single, Album, and Male Vocalist of the Year
  • 5 CMA Nominations – Vocal Group, Single, and Album
  • Performed for 8 U.S. Presidents
  • TV Appearances: Johnny Carson, Merv Griffin, Solid Gold, Oprah
  • Performed at venues such as Ryman Auditorium, Yankee Stadium, AT&T Stadium, Madison Square Garden, and Carnegie Hall

As Steve puts it, “We’re blessed that fans still love our music and attend our shows. We hope to keep going as long as that’s the case.”
